Double Bass

The Beautifully carved head stock has been broken in half, the wood is very old and is becoming brittle, this is when they acquire that vintage tone, but it will be a while before anyone hears it again.

The old PVA and other glues left on the heel and in the neck pocket tell a story here and  you can see why it failed

This is an old bass which i was asked to repair someone mentioned on face book that they could super glue it aaarghhh! so i offered to help, as you can see it was a sorry state and beyond economical repair, it had been in a school and obviously repaired umpteen times before, but look at the rosewood on that fret board i know a few luthiers that would have loved to get their hands on that.

First thing i wanted to do was repair the head stock

Top left i had to use pieces of architrave to make the clamping possible so after much gluing and clamping, the head was in one piece,

Then i had to cut a piece of wood to repair an infill which looked like another older repair which had broken out.

Right now for that neck joint, ive always wanted to do one of these.

You can see from the first two photos that it had previously been repaired using PVA wood glue so all of this has to be removed before gluing with hide glue, Hide glue is the only option here it adheres to everything and shrinks as it hardens which pulls the joint together, it also retains a natural flexibility, even so this old girl has had so many repairs the neck pocket had to be shimmed, in order to give it a closer fit.

IMG_2894this was too big to do in my old workshop so it had to be done in the house,  in order to get the neck clamped i had to use a furniture clamp and two bass strings, this is actually a very good system as you can center the neck by adjusting the the tuners. IMG_2895

once the glue has hardened properly there’s a lovely tight fit and the instrument that arrived in pieces is starting to show its beauty. After a good clean you can see the flame in the neck.

And here’s Trevor Newnham collecting it,
